Il semblerait que les britaniques connaissent aussi l'illettrisme ou alors la méconnaissance de leur langue.
En effet, selon un sondage réalisé par Learndirect,
une entreprise britannique de cours pour adultes, 10% des parents
anglais ont du mal à comprendre les histoires qu’ils racontent à leurs
enfants au coucher. Quasiment un quart d’entre eux (23%) avoue même
sauter les passages difficiles ou inventer la fin de la phrase...
Malgré tout, la lecture du soir reste un plaisir pour 73% des familles,
qui préfèrent partager ce moment avec leurs enfants plutôt que de
regarder la télé ou jouer au jardin public. Une psychologue pour
enfants, Pat Spungin, citée par le «Guardian», insiste d’ailleurs sur les bienfaits de cette pause lecture en famille, qui familiarise les enfants avec les livres.
D’après ce sondage - 1.000 personnes ont été interrogées -, le temps
consacré aux histoires du soir est d’environ 20 minutes quatre fois par
semaine.

It does not follow that because we do not subsidize smoking, we should not regulate unhealthy activities. Costs and savings are not the only variable. The fact that obesity creates costs is merely an additional reason to regulate it, not the only one. The main reason is its danger to an individual. You are dismissive of subsidizing smoking precisely because of this moral intuition.
